Vada Chennai ( North Chennai) is a 2018 Indian Tamil-language crime drama written and directed by Vetrimaaran. The film is produced by Lyca Productions, Wunderbar Films, and Grass Root Film Company. In the film, Dhanush plays Ambu, a talented carrom player who reluctantly joins a gang war between rival gangs, alongside Kishore, Samuthirakani, Daniel Balaji, Pawan, Andrea Jeremiah, Aishwarya Rajesh, and Amir. It is the first part of a planned trilogy.

The film has been in the news since late 2009, and it was officially announced in November 2011 that filming would begin in March 2012.It was shelved for a time, but was revived in May 2015 with a new cast. Dhanush plays the lead role. This will be his third collaboration with the director after Polladhavan (2007) and Aadukalam (2011). The principal photography of the film began in June 2016 and was completed in February 2018. The cinematography of the film was handled by Velraj, editing was done by G. B. Venkatesh and R. Ramar and the film’s music is by Santosh Narayanan. Vada Chennai was initially scheduled to be released on 13 September 2018 during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, but was postponed to 17 October 2018 due to post-production work. The film received positive reviews from critics, who praised its direction, plot, music, action scenes and performances, but criticized the dialogues. After its release, the film sparked controversy from the fishing community, after the director decided to remove scenes from the film and add new ones, as some scenes in the film were found to be objectionable.

Guna, “Java” Pajani, Velu and Senthil kill a “big” crime boss in a restaurant in North Madras (Madras is the former name of Chennai, the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu). Senthil asks Guna and Velu to face the murder case while he releases them on bail. A year later, despite the intervention of Mani and the crime boss’ brother Thambi, the couple are still in prison, causing a deep rift between them and Senthil.
The new warden of Madras Central Jail plans to eradicate all nefarious activities in the prison run by Senthil in Block 7. Senthil sells drugs worth millions of dollars every month in a highly sophisticated manner and never leaves Block 7, fearing for his life from Guna’s henchmen in Block 11. Anbu and Velu’s brother Siva are jailed for a fight. Anbu saves Raju, one of Senthil’s henchmen, from death at Siva’s hands. Anbu is posted in Block 11 under Velu and Mani. During a robbery, Anbu gives away Mani’s mobile phone and is nearly killed for it, but is rescued by the prison warden. He is shown to have saved his right hand from injury during the attack.

Vada Chennai is a multi-layered gangster drama that unfolds slowly. And then there is Dhanush, who displays his outstanding acting skills in every shot he is in. Unlike most Tamil films, Vada Chennai has a strong female character called Andrea, who seems mysterious at first but becomes an adrenaline rush by the end. Despite Ambu (Dhanush’s character) being the protagonist, Vada Chennai’s script has a lot of layers and characters, which doesn’t stop Vetrimaaran from bringing about a character like Rajan.
The film features a long list of well-crafted characters. Samuthirakani, Ameer, Daniel Balaji, Aiswarya Rajeesh and Kishore have done a fantastic job here. Vada Chennai’s cinematographer Velraj, who has worked with Dhanush on multiple occasions, has captured every shot brilliantly this time too. What makes Vada Chennai different from other gangster dramas is the way Vetrimaaran crafted this film. Vada Chennai is a unique film not to be missed and a perfect start to this trilogy.
