Pariyerum Perumal Movie Story
Pariyan Perumal is a young man from Puliyankulam village near Tirunelveli and belongs to an oppressed caste. The film begins with his pet dog Karuppi (translated as Black) being killed due to caste supremacy. Pariyan joins the Government Law College in Tirunelveli and wants to become a lawyer like B.R. Ambedkar. He meets Jyoti Mahalakshmi aka Jo, a simple-minded girl from Ambasamudram who takes it upon herself to teach Pariyan
English. She eventually falls in love with his innocence and sincerity. This new-born friendship angers Sankaralingam, a law student and Jo’s cousin. He waits for an opportunity to teach Pariyan a lesson and establish his caste superiority. He does this while a blissfully ignorant Jo invites Pariyan to a family wedding. In another part of the city, an old man is seen developing his own ways of killing innocent people; for example, strangling or hanging young girls and drowning students in a river. At a wedding he is invited to, Pariyan is beaten to death and even urinated on by Sankaralingam and his goons. It is called off and Pariyan is warned by Joe’s father not to get involved in his life. Joe, unaware of all this, berates Pariyan for not coming to his sister’s wedding the next day as he was the only one Pariyan had invited from his college.
Pariyerum Perumal Movie Review
One of the most fascinating storylines is told perfectly. The actors were perfect for their roles. The plot portrays the harsh reality of stigma and deprivation in many parts of India.
It is rare for a debut director to deliver a masterpiece but this film will be remembered as one of the finest for decades to come. This is not only a good film with a focus on a message but it is a complete package. You are more than deserving of the National Award. Thank you Mari Selvaraj and Pa Ranjith.
