Stone was cast in the role in 2016 and serves as executive producer on the project alongside Glenn Close, who previously played Cruella in the live-action versions of 101 Dalmatians (1996) and 102 Dalmatians (2000). Principal photography took place in the UK between August and November 2019, with a budget of $100–200 million.

In 1964 England, Estella Miller was a creative child with a knack for fashion, but was ostracized because of her black and white hair, and developed a nefarious personality. Her mother, Catherine, calls her “Cruella” for her nefarious personality and encourages her to be nicer. As Estella continues to get into trouble at school, Catherine decides to move to London with her. They attend a party at Helman Hall, a mansion on the Suffolk coast, and ask the host for money. When Estella sneaks in, she is chased by the host’s Dalmatian dog, loses her mother’s necklace, and Catherine is pushed to her death from a cliff-side balcony. Estella escapes to London as an orphan and befriends street kids Jasper and Horace. The three become good friends. Estella hones her fashion skills by stealing and cheating with Jasper and Horace, and designing disguises with her dogs Buddy and Wink. On her birthday in 1977, Jasper offers her a job at the Liberty department store, but Estella is appointed caretaker and is not given the opportunity to use her talents. After drunkenly redecorating a shop window, she impresses the Baroness, a famous but authoritarian haute couture designer, who offers her a job at her dream fashion house. Estella wins the Baroness’s trust, but then notices that she is wearing Catherine’s necklace. The Baroness claims that it is an heirloom once stolen by an employee. Estella suspects that the Baroness is lying and asks Jasper and Horace to help her bring her back to the Baroness’s Black and White Ball.
