Qala was released on Netflix on December 1, 2022 It is loosely based on K. Viswanath’s Swati Kiranam and Miloa Forman’s Amadeus.
At the Filmfare OTT Awards 2023, Qala was nominated for six awards including Best Web Original Film, Best Web Original Film (Dimri), Best Supporting Actress (Mukherjee) and won Best Production Design (Web Original Film) (Meenal Agarwal).

Qala Movie Story
Set in the 1940s, Qala depicts the tumultuous relationship between an aspiring singer and her domineering mother. The film begins with Kala Manjushree, who has just won a gold record. She is interviewed by a few journalists and mentions her brother. Dismayed, Kala replies that she has no brother. In a flashback, her mother Urmila, pregnant with twins, gives birth to Kala, but her stillborn brother does not survive. Enraged, Urmila tries to suffocate Kala.
Qala Review
Qala was one of those psychological Bollywood movies that I would recommend to anyone who is mentally healthy. The premise is so dark that most of the characters have a nervous breakdown at one point. The cinematography and all the effects and Tripti Dimri’s acting made you feel her emotions without the need for actual words, which was something new for Bollywood.
