For 20 years, Ivan the gorilla has been the main attraction at the Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, a circus located inside a shopping mall in Central Florida, run by ringmaster Mack. Ivan shares his captivity with fellow animal performers, including the wise elephant Stella, the spoiled poodle Snickers, the spirited baseball-playing chicken Henrietta, the toy fire truck-riding rabbit Murphy, the anxious sea lion Frankie, and the talkative parrot Thelma. He also befriends a stray mutt that lives in his enclosure. Ivan’s caretaker, George, often brings his daughter Julia, who connects with Ivan by gifting him her old crayons. She helps interpret Ivan’s drawings and names the stray dog Bob.
As business dwindles at the mall, Mack acquires a baby elephant named Ruby from a bankrupt circus. Ruby quickly becomes the new star, drawing large crowds, which sparks jealousy in Ivan. When Stella’s health deteriorates and she can no longer perform, Ivan encourages Ruby to face the audience on her own. He shares his backstory, revealing how Mack and his wife Helen adopted him as a baby. As Ivan grew, his natural behaviors drove Helen away, leading Mack to purchase the mall and transform it into a circus. After Stella dies, asking Ivan to ensure Ruby’s freedom, Ivan becomes determined to help Ruby escape. While Mack trains Ruby for the circus, Ivan hatches a plan to free her. Julia shows Ivan’s drawings to Mack, who seeks to promote them as a new attraction. However, despite the crowd that gathers to see him draw, Ivan refuses to perform. That night, he and Bob outsmart the security guard, Castello, and manage to free the animals, although Snickers chooses to remain behind. The group escapes across a highway, but they soon realize the nearby “forest” is merely an intersection surrounded by the city.

When the movie began, I briefly feared that Disney was going to let me down. As an animal activist, I was troubled by the portrayal of happy animals in a circus, which starkly contrasts with reality. However, the story takes a significant turn that ultimately filled me with optimism. I understand that as a family-friendly film, there’s a tendency to romanticize the lives of animals in captivity to create a more palatable narrative. Nevertheless, it’s an important film that effectively conveys the message, especially to children, that wild animals belong in the wild or in environments that closely resemble their natural habitats.
