Chernobyl Story
Chernobyl dramatizes the story of the nuclear disaster that occurred in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) in April 1986, telling the stories of those caught up in it and those who responded to it. The series details some of the lesser known stories of the disaster, including the efforts of the firefighters who were first on the scene, volunteers, and the mining teams who dug the crucial tunnel under Reactor 4.
The miniseries is based primarily on the recollections of local residents of Pripyat as told by Belarusian Nobel laureate Svetlana Alexievich in her book Voices from Chernobyl. Researchers have documented how Alexievich inserted her own words into those of her interviewees in this and other books, as well as how she extensively edited her interviews (even from one edition to the next), suggesting that her work should not be seen as a brief history.
Chernobyl Review
This miniseries is a perfect masterpiece in every way. Some people complain that the actors here don’t speak Russian. I’m a native Russian and Ukrainian speaker and I don’t want the actors to speak Russian. I’m too engrossed in this show to care what language they’re speaking.
This is not a documentary so not every detail is accurate, but I still think it’s authentic. The creators got the essential thing right… Both of my parents worked at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and I grew up seeing stories and versions of what happened. I think this show best represents the story of the Chernobyl disaster and its victims. This show should remind us of the cost of lies.
