Valimai (transl. “Strength”) is a 2022 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film written and directed by H. Vinoth, produced by Boney Kapoor under Bayview Projects LLP in collaboration with Zee Studios as a co-producer and distributor. The film stars Ajith Kumar, Karthikeya, Huma Qureshi, and Gurbani Judge. The score is composed by Ghibran, with songs by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Cinematography is handled by Nirav Shah, and the editing is done by Vijay Velukutty. The story follows Arjun, a police officer tasked with tracking down a gang of outlaw bikers involved in serious crimes.

This film marks the second collaboration between Ajith, Vinoth, and Kapoor, following Nerkonda Paarvai (2019). Vinoth began writing the script in mid-2018, but Ajith initially turned it down, requesting that it be developed later. The concept was revisited in January 2019, with Kapoor agreeing to finance the project, which was officially launched in mid-October 2019 along with its title. Principal photography commenced in December 2019 in Hyderabad and concluded in February 2021, despite disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Major filming locations included Chennai and Hyderabad, with some sequences shot in Russia during late August and early September 2021. The film generated considerable buzz, largely due to fan-driven campaigns for updates on the project, including the #ValimaiUpdate movement, which impacted sports, politics, and other events. This momentum contributed to its status as one of the most anticipated Tamil films in the trade circuit. Arjun is the sole breadwinner in his family consisting of Lakshmi; his drunkard older brother Kothandam and his wife; his married younger sister; and his younger brother Ashok “Kutty”, an unemployed graduate. Kutty is constantly looked down by his sisters-in-law, whose daughter he is in love with, for his unemployment, worrying Arjun and Lakshmi. Collaborating with his partner and friend Sophia, Arjun finds the corpse of Naveen, a man in a hostel whose friend Chinna had betrayed the gang and supplied drugs to him. However, Naveen had burned the drugs and committed suicide by hanging, while Chinna had been killed by the biker gang upon learning of his betrayal. Arjun finds Naveen’s helmet in his room and finds out that he was a snatch thief who used a stolen motorcycle purchased from an online black marketeer. Arjun and Sophia both figure out the sequence of crimes done by Satan’s Slaves.
The bikes used in the crimes had been bought from the same platform using stolen mobile phones via the dark web and that all of these crimes are done by the same organization. After sending one of his colleagues posing as a mercenary to thugs retired from the drug peddling business to find out the kingpin, Arjun learns about Wolfranga and a bike chase and close-combat ensues where Arjun manages to defeat Wolfranga and the gang and arrests them. To his shock, finds out that Kutty had also been involved with the gang. While taking them to prison, Satan’s Slaves attacks the convoy, kills the policemen, and aids Wolfranga to escape. Arjun tries to corner Wolfranga, but he is knocked by Kutty, who escapes with the gang.
Valimai Movie Review
Although Valimai has a lengthy runtime, the storytelling remains focused, making the time pass quickly. Ajith Kumar’s character is more grounded than in his previous roles; he embodies strength while also showcasing vulnerability. His commitment to justice is convincingly portrayed on screen. The villains and supporting characters, particularly Kartikeya Gummakonda and Huma Qureshi, have moments where they shine, adding depth to the story. Two antagonistic police officers are played by skilled actors who effectively evoke hatred from the audience.
On the technical side, the cinematography and editing are exceptional. The action scenes are engaging and stand out as one of the film’s major highlights. However, some viewers may find the climax unconvincing. Aside from that, it’s a fantastic cinematic experience for fans of Ajith Kumar and the action genre as a whole. I watched the Hindi dub, which was quite well done.
