Vaathi (transl. Teacher) is a 2023 Indian Tamil-Telugu bilingual period action drama film written and directed by Venky Atluri. The film features Dhanush in his Telugu debut, alongside Samyuktha and Samuthirakani. Released on February 17, 2023, Vaathi quickly became one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of the year, grossing ₹118 crore worldwide.In late July 2021, it was reported that Dhanush would collaborate with Venky Atluri for his upcoming directorial project, marking Dhanush’s debut in Telugu cinema. Sithara Entertainments was confirmed as the producer for the film. On December 22, the company officially announced the project, with the titles Vaathi and Sir revealed the following day. Venky Atluri assembled a talented crew, including music composer G. V. Prakash Kumar, cinematographer Dinesh Krishnan, and editor Navin Nooli. Samyuktha was also announced as the lead actress on the same day.

Principal photography for Vaathi began on January 5, 2022. The second shooting schedule commenced in April 2022, when Dhanush joined the sets after completing his work on Naane Varuvean. Filming wrapped up in October 2022.

Bala devises a plan to record his lectures on cassette tapes and sends them to Bhupathi, a photographer in Sozhavaram. Every day at 6 p.m., Bhupathi hosts special screenings in a nearby theater where Bala’s lectures are played for students. To engage with the students and address their doubts, Bala visits the village disguised as a drama artist each Sunday.
On the day of the exam, Thirupathi tries to intimidate the students, but Bala steps in to defend them. As a result, the students perform exceptionally well, with Muthu achieving the top rank and revealing his true identity as Kumar. Thirupathi then offers money to all the students, promising sponsorship for their further studies, provided they endorse his institution. Bala encourages the students to accept the offer, urging them to help those in need once they have climbed the socio-economic ladder. In the present, Kumar reflects on how the theater where they once studied has transformed into a coaching center for underprivileged students, developed by former students who take turns teaching each year. While Kumar is unaware of Bala’s current whereabouts, it is revealed that Bala and Meenakshi are alive and have established the Ansari School of Knowledge in Ooty, providing free education to the underprivileged.
