Adiga began adapting his book into a film in late 2010, selling the rights to producer Mukul Deora. In The White Tiger, entrepreneur Balram Halwai emails Chinese premier Wen Jiabao, sharing his life story and his belief that the Indian underclass is trapped in servitude. Balram, born in a poor village, dreams of education but is forced to work in a tea stall after his father’s death. He aspires to become a chauffeur for the wealthy Stork family and eventually drives for their son, Ashok, and his wife, Pinky, who treat him with some respect, though still view him as a servant.
After a tragic incident on Pinky’s birthday, where she accidentally kills a child, Balram realizes his disposable status. Following Pinky’s departure back to New York and growing disillusioned, he starts to defraud Ashok and make money on the side. However, facing family pressures and impending job loss, Balram has a transformative epiphany.
In a desperate bid for freedom, he murders Ashok and flees with the stolen bribe money. Balram relocates to Bangalore, where he establishes his own taxi company, treating his drivers well and taking responsibility for their actions. He uses part of the stolen money to support his nephew’s education, acknowledging the potential consequences for his family back home. Ultimately, Balram embraces his new life and identity as Ashok Sharma, reveling in his escape from servitude.
