The Promised Land Movie Story

in 1755, Captain Ludvig Kahlen, a destitute Danish officer with humble origins, retires after 25 years in the German Army, receiving only a meager pension. Seeking a new beginning, he obtains permission from the Royal Danish Court to cultivate a barren plot of moorland in Jutland. His goal is to establish a settlement, and in exchange, he requests a noble title and an associated manor.Upon arriving at the site, Kahlen quickly finds himself in conflict with Frederik Schinkel, a ruthless local magistrate and landowner intent on monopolizing the moorland. Schinkel uses his influence to sabotage Kahlen’s efforts to secure laborers. Undeterred, Kahlen secretly hires Johannes Eriksen and his wife, Ann Barbara—indentured serfs who fled Schinkel’s oppressive control. He is led to their camp by Anmai Mus, a Romani girl caught trying to steal from him, and he also recruits the “Tatere” Romani Travellers, despite the legal risks involved.

Meanwhile, Schinkel’s cousin and betrothed, Edel Helene, is unwilling to marry him, but her father insists on the union due to Schinkel’s wealth. He challenges her to find an alternative suitor within a year. At a harvest ball, Edel and Kahlen share a secret kiss, agreeing that if he can acquire a noble title in that time, they will marry, offering her an escape from her fate. The evening takes a dark turn when Schinkel reveals that he has captured Johannes while he was attempting to fetch clay for Kahlen’s farm. In a brutal display, he tortures Johannes to death in front of horrified guests. Kahlen retrieves Johannes’ body to bring it to Ann, but the gruesome sight drives away most of his workers, though Anmai chooses to stay.
