In 1878, in the Montana Territory, gunslinger Colton Briggs was part of a group planning to band together to extrajudicially arrest and hang the brother of notorious bandit Walter McAllister. Walter and his men try to prevent the public execution, but a gunfight ensues in which only Colton and McAllister’s son James survive. Colton assures Walter’s brother that he will not kill him; his execution was merely a diversion to force his brother out of his hiding place. Enraged, the young McAllister attempts to shoot Colton in the back. Colton does not hesitate to shoot Walter dead, then calmly rides off on horseback as Walter’s young nephew James looks on. Twenty years later, Colton is a different man. Influenced by his wife Ruth, he is a successful businessman with a general store and a small farm, and is raising a 12-year-old daughter named Brooke. To Colton’s dismay, Brooke is rebellious and unruly. He finds her emotionally withdrawn and unable to act like a “normal person,” a trait that reminds him of his past life. One day, four men ride horses to Colton’s farm. Their leader calls himself James McAllister. His gang stabs Ruth to death, and she paints mocking messages on the wall in her blood and disappears.
