While it grossed $62 million against a $50 million budget, the film has since developed a cult following, particularly for the dynamic comedic interplay between its two leads.Principal photography for The Nice Guys began on October 27, 2014, in Atlanta and Decatur, Georgia. Production designer Richard Bridgland faced the challenge of transforming the green landscape of Atlanta into the desert-like feel of 1970s Los Angeles. However, he found suitable locations such as music producer Dallas Austin’s house, which was inspired by architect John Lautner’s work in Southern California, and the Atlanta Hilton, which had remained largely unchanged since its construction in 1976. On October 31, a police station scene was filmed in Atlanta, with extras on set. Additional filming took place in Los Angeles, primarily to capture exterior shots of locations like The Comedy Store.
To authentically recreate the 1970s, Bridgland conducted extensive research, drawing from sources like Super 8 films and documentary photographs. The furniture design was inspired by renowned designers such as Verner Panton. For the glamour photography of the character Misty Mountains, Bridgland enlisted Arny Freytag, a photographer known for his Playboy centerfolds of the era. Adding to the retro feel, Warner Bros. opened the film with its 1972–84 production logo featuring the “Big W” design by Saul Bass for Warner Communications.

The Nice Guys Movie Story
In 1977 Los Angeles, private investigator Holland March is hired by Mrs. Glenn to find her niece, Misty Mountains, a porn star who Mrs. Glenn claims to have seen alive despite her reported death. March’s investigation leads him to Amelia Kuttner, but before he can get far, Amelia hires Jackson Healy, a tough enforcer, to scare March off the case. Healy visits March at his home, roughs him up, and breaks his arm, but on his way out, he accepts a Yoo-hoo drink offered by March’s teenage daughter, Holly. Later, Healy is confronted at his apartment by two thugs, “Blueface”named after setting off a dye pack while searching the place—and an older man. They are searching for Amelia. Realizing that Amelia is in serious danger, Healy fights off the attackers and decides to team up with a reluctant March to find her.
Their investigation leads them to Amelia’s anti-pollution protest group, where they meet Chet, who guides them to the burnt remains of the house belonging to Amelia’s boyfriend, Dean, who perished in the fire. They discover that Amelia, Dean, and Misty had been working together on an “experimental film” blending pornography with investigative journalism. The duo infiltrates a lavish party to search for the film’s financier, Sid Shattuck. During the party, Healy realizes the film has been stolen, while March stumbles upon Shattuck’s corpse and unexpectedly runs into Amelia. Holly, who had secretly followed them to the party, saves Amelia from being killed by Blueface. Blueface is then struck in a hit-and-run, and Amelia escapes. Healy manages to capture the older thug, and as Blueface lies dying, he reveals that a hitman named John Boy has been hired to eliminate all witnesses. Healy quietly strangles Blueface to death before the police arrive.
The Nice Guys Movie Review
The story is convoluted, to say the least, with multiple plot threads and characters that threaten to overwhelm. However, Black’s direction keeps the pace frenetic and engaging, making it easy to follow the twists and turns. The film’s climax, a chaotic hotel chase, is a standout sequence that showcases the director’s skill at blending action and comedy. The Nice Guys” is a love letter to 1970s Los Angeles, with its smoggy skies, retro fashion, and period soundtrack. The film’s attention to detail is impressive, from the posters for “Airport ’77” to the Playboy bunny girls. While some may find the nostalgic charm a bit forced, it adds to the film’s overall sense of fun and irreverence.
Ultimately, “The Nice Guys” is a guilty pleasure – a film that knows it’s a bit trashy and revels in its own sleaziness. It’s not a perfect movie, but its flaws are part of its charm. For fans of buddy cop comedies and 1970s nostalgia, “The Nice Guys” is a must-see. star recommendation: If you enjoy offbeat comedies with a retro vibe, “The Nice Guys” is worth a watch. Fans of Shane Black’s previous work, such as “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” will also appreciate the film’s similar tone and style.
