The Hateful Eight is a 2015 American Western film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The movie features an ensemble cast including Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demián Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Bruce Dern. Set some time after the American Civil War, the plot revolves around eight mysterious strangers seeking refuge from a blizzard at a stagecoach stopover. Tarantino first announced the project in November 2013. Originally conceived as a novel and a sequel to his 2012 film Django Unchained, he eventually decided to develop it as a standalone film. However, when the script leaked in January 2014, he briefly abandoned the project, considering releasing it as a novel instead. In April 2014, he staged a live reading of the script in Los Angeles, which led him to revise the screenplay and move forward with production. Filming began in January 2015 near Telluride, Colorado.

Renowned Italian composer Ennio Morricone scored the film, marking his first full Western score in 34 years and his first original score for a Tarantino film. It was also his last original score before his death in 2020. Released by The Weinstein Company, The Hateful Eight premiered in a limited roadshow release on December 25, 2015, with a wider release following five days later. The film garnered praise for its direction, screenplay, performances, cinematography, and Morricone’s score. However, opinions were divided on its length, editing, the portrayal of race relations, and the violent treatment of Leigh’s character. The film grossed over $156 million worldwide. Morricone’s score won him his only Academy Award for Best Original Score after five previous nominations. The film also earned Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress (Leigh) and Best Cinematography.

In 1870, bounty hunter and Union Army veteran Major Marquis Warren is traveling through Wyoming Territory with three bounty corpses, heading to Red Rock. When his horse collapses and a blizzard looms, Warren catches a ride on a stagecoach driven by O.B. Jackson. Also aboard is fellow bounty hunter John “The Hangman” Ruth, who is escorting fugitive Daisy “Crazy” Domergue to Red Rock to be hanged. Ruth, who is notoriously cautious, has Domergue handcuffed to him. Warren and Ruth share a past connection, having bonded over a letter Warren claims to have received from Abraham Lincoln.
As they travel, they encounter Chris Mannix, who claims to be the new sheriff of Red Rock and the son of Erskine Mannix, leader of a pro-Confederate militia known as Mannix’s Marauders. Mannix joins the group, and during the ride, Ruth learns about the Confederate bounty placed on Warren’s head for his role in escaping and burning down a prisoner-of-war camp during the Civil War.
The Hateful Eight Movie Review
Five stars and a big thumbs up from me. This is my second time watching The Hateful Eight, and it’s a masterclass in filmmaking. It’s amazing to see Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh working side by side again, this time sharing the screen. Samuel L. Jackson delivers an almost godlike performance, as his fans have come to expect. And, of course, Michael Madsen and Tim Roth, part of Tarantino’s loyal crew, are killing it as usual. Bruce Dern adds a layer of wisdom with his seasoned presence.
If you appreciate true filmmaking, this movie is a must-watch. Fast forward a few decades, if I’m lucky enough to be at a seniors home and in charge of the cinema room, this film will definitely be on the list—assuming the cool staff are on shift. We’ll play it after the jello, of course!
