The Boy and the Heron Movie Story
During the Pacific War in Tokyo, Mahito Maki’s mother dies in a hospital fire. His father, an air munitions factory owner, marries his late wife’s sister, Natsuko, and they move to her rural estate. Mahito, distant from Natsuko, is led by a grey heron to a sealed tower where Natsuko’s granduncle was last seen. After a school fight, Mahito injures himself and is approached by the talking heron, who promises to help find his mother. Natsuko saves Mahito from creatures, and he learns to craft a magical bow and arrow using a heron’s feather.
When Natsuko disappears, Mahito discovers a Birdman living inside the heron. With the wizard’s guidance, Mahito explores different worlds with allies like Kiriko and Himi. The trio faces challenges, including the parakeet kingdom and collapsing worlds. Mahito ultimately rejects the wizard’s offer to create a new world, choosing instead to embrace his loved ones back in Tokyo after realizing the power of love and connection.
The Boy and the Heron Movie Review
if you like and love movies, you’ll probably like The Boy and the Heron. It’s not Miyazaki and Ghibli’s strongest film, but it’s a very good addition to their filmography. The film starts slowly, defining the world, the characters and their dilemmas mostly visually. As the film progresses, we see hints of another world. Before you know it, it becomes a full-blown fever dream of Hayao Miyazaki’s imagination and storytelling. In the end, he finally gets going.
