The story follows the Turtles as they team up with their new ally, April O’Neil, to face off against a mysterious crime boss, Superfly, and his gang of dangerous mutants. The project was first conceived in 2018, with Rogen’s involvement announced in 2020, and was produced by Rogen, Goldberg, and James Weaver through their production company, Point Grey Pictures. Aiming to focus on the teenage aspect of the characters, the filmmakers drew inspiration from coming-of-age teen films. The Animation was provided by Mikros Animation and Cinesite, with a distinctive style inspired by school notebook sketches. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross composed the film’s score.
Mutant Mayhem premiered as a work-in-progress at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 12, 2023, and was released by Paramount Pictures on August 2, 2023. It grossed $180.5 million worldwide and was widely praised for its voice performances, screenplay, and unique Animation style. Many critics considered it the best Turtles film to date.
