Tanu Weds Manu Returns is a 2015 Indian romantic comedy directed by Aanand L. Rai, serving as a sequel to the 2011 film Tanu Weds Manu. The film features R. Madhavan, Kangana Ranaut, Jimmy Sheirgill, Deepak Dobriyal, Swara Bhaskar, and Eijaz Khan reprising their roles from the original. In this sequel, Ranaut also takes on the role of a Haryanvi athlete. The story, screenplay, and dialogues were crafted by Himanshu Sharma, while Krsna Solo composed the soundtrack and film score, with lyrics by Rajshekhar. Choreography was done by Saroj Khan and Bosco–Caesar, and the film was edited by Hemal Kothari.

Principal photography commenced in October 2014, and the film was released on May 22, 2015. It continues the story of the couple, exploring the next chapter of their lives. Tanu Weds Manu Returns initially held the record for the highest opening weekend collections for a female-led film in India, later surpassed by Ranaut’s own Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi in 2019. It was the first Indian female-led film to cross the ₹100 crore mark. Produced on a budget of ₹39 crore (approximately ₹59 crore or US$7.1 million in 2023), the film went on to earn ₹255.3 crore (around ₹385 crore or US$46 million in 2023) globally, making it one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2015 and one of the top female-led films in India. Tanu Sharma and Manoj Kumar Sharma, known as Manu, are a couple living in London who have been married for four years but find themselves in an unhappy and dysfunctional relationship. In a fit of revenge, Tanu has Manu committed to a mental asylum before returning to her hometown of Kanpur, India. While in Kanpur, she receives a call from her friend Payal, who informs her that she has just given birth to a baby girl. Before leaving London, Tanu contacts Manu’s friend, Pappi Kutti, in Delhi, instructing him to travel to London and secure Manu’s release. Back in Kanpur at her parents’ home, Tanu encounters a sly law student named Chintu, who has become a lodger in her parents’ house but refuses to pay rent or vacate the room. Chintu befriends Tanu and gradually develops a crush on her, amused by her antics. Meanwhile, Tanu discovers that her ex-boyfriend, Raja Awasthi, is getting engaged to another girl, which makes her feel jealous.
After Pappi successfully retrieves Manu from the asylum, they both return to India, where Manu sends Tanu a legal notice demanding an apology, but she ignores it. One day, while attending a medical conference at Delhi University, Manu sees Kusum Sangwan, a young Haryanvi student-athlete who bears a striking resemblance to Tanu. He becomes increasingly obsessed with Kusum, despite Pappi’s warnings to stay away. After a confrontation with Kusum, Manu opens up about his troubled marriage with Tanu. Sympathizing with his situation, Kusum and Manu slowly develop feelings for each other. Manu expresses his desire to marry Kusum and meets her elder brother, Omi, who has no objections to their relationship. However, Omi shows Manu a picture of the boy his wife wishes Kusum to marry, and to Manu’s surprise, it turns out to be Raja. Meanwhile, Payal calls Tanu to confess that the father of her newborn baby is not her husband, Jassi Gill.
