In 1976, at a Boston police station, two officers discuss the arrest of Father John Geoghan for child molestation. A high-ranking church official speaks with the mother of the victimized children, while an assistant district attorney enters the precinct, instructing the officers to keep the press in the dark about the incident. As a result, Geoghan’s arrest is not publicized, and he is soon released.
Fast forward to 2001, when Marty Baron, the new managing editor of The Boston Globe, meets with Walter “Robby” Robinson, the editor of the newspaper’s investigative team, Spotlight. After reading an article about attorney Mitchell Garabedian’s claims that Cardinal Bernard Law, the Archbishop of Boston, was aware of Geoghan’s sexual abuse and failed to act, Baron urges the Spotlight team to investigate further. Journalist Michael Rezendes reaches out to Garabedian, who initially hesitates to speak. Despite being advised against it, Rezendes reveals his affiliation with the Spotlight team and successfully persuades Garabedian to share his insights. What begins as an investigation into the misconduct of a single priest soon uncovers a troubling pattern of sexual abuse involving multiple priests in Massachusetts and a systematic cover-up by the Boston Archdiocese. With the help of Phil Saviano, who leads the victims’ rights group Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), the team expands their inquiry to include thirteen priests. Richard Sipe, a former priest dedicated to rehabilitating abusive clergy, informs them that his research suggests there are around 90 abusive priests in Boston—approximately 6% of all priests. As they delve deeper, the team compiles a list of 87 names and gathers testimony from victims to substantiate their findings.
