Sicario is a 2015 American action thriller directed by Denis Villeneuve, with a screenplay by Taylor Sheridan. The film stars Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin and centers on an idealistic FBI special agent who is recruited by a government task force to take down the leader of a powerful and violent Mexican drug cartel. The movie was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and had a limited U.S. release on September 18, 2015, before expanding nationwide on October 2, 2015.

In Chandler, Arizona, FBI Special Agents Kate Macer and Reggie Wayne lead a raid on a Sonora Cartel safe house, uncovering dozens of decaying corpses concealed within the walls. As they exit, an explosive booby trap detonates, killing two police officers. Following the raid, Kate is recommended for a Joint Task Force led by CIA Officer Matt Graver and the enigmatic Alejandro Gillick, a former Colombian prosecutor turned CIA-trained assassin. Their objective is to track down and apprehend Sonora lieutenant Manuel Díaz, who is currently operating within the United States.
The team, which includes Delta Force operators, Deputy U.S. Marshals, and CIA personnel, travels to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, to extradite Díaz’s brother, Guillermo. While crossing the El Paso–Juárez border, they are ambushed by cartel hitmen, resulting in a swift and brutal gunfight. During the chaos, Kate is forced to kill a Federal Police officer, leaving her visibly shaken by the violence. Back in the U.S., Alejandro tortures Guillermo to extract information and discovers that the cartel uses a tunnel near Nogales, Sonora, for drug smuggling. Meanwhile, Kate confronts Matt, who reveals that the true mission is to disrupt Díaz’s drug operations in order to lead them to his boss, drug lord Fausto Alarcón. Disturbed by this revelation, Kate seeks Reggie’s support.
