In February 2019, MGM announced it had acquired the spec script Samaritan by Bragi F. Schut, which would be co-produced with Balboa Productions. Schut had originally written the screenplay before adapting it into a series of graphic novels published by Mythos Comics. In September 2019, Julius Avery joined the project as the director. Sylvester Stallone was confirmed to star in the titular role and also serve as producer. By February 2020, several actors, including Martin Starr, Moisés Arias, Dascha Polanco, Pilou Asbæk, Javon “Wanna” Walton, Jared Odrick, and Michael Aaron Milligan, had joined the cast in supporting roles. The following month, Natacha Karam was also added to the cast.

Superhumans Samaritan and Nemesis were twin brothers who grew up in Granite City. After their home was burned down by the residents, who believed they were a threat, the twins escaped while their parents perished in the fire. Samaritan chose to become a SUPERHERO, striving to change the world’s perception of him, while Nemesis, consumed by revenge, embraced his identity as a supervillain, desiring for others to experience the same suffering their family endured. The two brothers were evenly matched, with Nemesis crafting a mystical sledgehammer that gave him an advantage over Samaritan, although it could also harm him. In a climactic battle at the city’s power plant, both brothers appeared to be killed in an explosion that left the city in darkness. Despite this, many still believe Samaritan is alive.
Twenty-five years later, thirteen-year-old Sam Cleary struggles to assist his mother through their financial troubles. Faced with the threat of eviction, he reluctantly accepts a job from a gang led by Reza. When the plan goes awry, Reza attempts to pin the blame on Sam, but the true gang leader, Cyrus, is impressed by Sam’s ingenuity and rewards him with $110. Later, Reza and his crew retaliate against Sam, but they are stopped by Joe Smith
Samaritan Movie Review
This film is definitely a decent and enjoyable watch! My only complaint is about Cyrus’s motivation as the villain—it feels a bit forgettable. But despite that, I absolutely LOVE THIS FILM! I didn’t see the plot twist coming at the end, which was a nice surprise. Seeing Joe Smith (played by Sylvester Stallone) get redemption for his past actions is phenomenal. The movie really emphasizes the theme of second chances, which is a great moral lesson. Overall, this is probably the most enjoyable indie SUPERHERO film I’ve ever seen. I highly recommend it if you’re a fan of indie SUPERHERO movies!
