Peacemaker is an American SUPERHERO television series created by James Gunn for HBO Max (now rebranded as Max), based on the DC Comics character of the same name. It is the only DC Extended Universe (DCEU) television series and serves as a spin-off from the 2021 film The Suicide Squad. The series is set after the events of the film and delves deeper into the character of Christopher Smith, also known as Peacemaker, a jingoistic mercenary. Produced by the Safran Company and Troll Court Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television, Gunn serves as the showrunner. The upcoming second season is produced by DC Studios and represents a “soft reboot” of the DCEU within the new DC Universe (DCU).

John Cena reprises his role as the titular character, joined by a talented supporting cast including Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick. Gunn conceived the series after recognizing Cena’s dramatic acting abilities during the filming of The Suicide Squad and wrote the first season while completing that project. HBO Max ordered the series straight-to-series in September 2020, with filming taking place in Vancouver, Canada, from January to July 2021, during which Gunn directed five episodes.e chose a hair metal soundtrack for the series, featuring songs like “Do Ya Wanna Taste It” by Wig Wam for the opening title dance sequence. A second season was confirmed in February 2022, with Gunn again penning all episodes. This new season is integrated into the DCU following Gunn’s appointment as co-CEO of DC Studios, with filming slated to begin in April 2024 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia.

Peacemaker Story
The first season of Peacemaker follows Christopher Smith, also known as Peacemaker, as he recovers from the injuries sustained during the events of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film The Suicide Squad (2021). Peacemaker is compelled to join the secretive A.R.G.U.S. black ops team known as “Project Butterfly,” which is tasked with identifying and eliminating parasitic, butterfly-like creatures that have taken control of human bodies worldwide.
The upcoming second season is set within the DC Universe (DCU) and will explore the aftermath of the DCU film Superman (2025).
Peacemaker Review
Especially in the season finale (Episode 8: “It’s Cow or Never”), the battle was one of the best moments in the show, showcasing Peacemaker as truly unstoppable with his iconic peace shield. This series feels like a comic book coming to life right before your eyes. James Gunn has done an incredible job, and I’m so grateful for this show. I eagerly anticipate Season 2!
I remember hearing about this show a few months ago, and knowing James Gunn was involved gave me zero doubts about its quality. I genuinely have no complaints—while I’m a bit sad that Season 1 has ended, I know more is on the way, and I can’t wait! The blend of dark themes and comedy is executed perfectly, demonstrating Gunn’s mastery in comic book adaptations.
A huge thank you to James and the entire cast and crew for creating this amazing series. I HIGHLY recommend Peacemaker to anyone who loves SUPERHERO stories and wild comic book adventures!
