The journey to adapt Muruganantham’s life began in 2015 when Khanna stumbled upon his inspiring story while researching for a column in The Times of India. Moved by his determination, she wrote about him in her book, which led to the film’s development. In November 2017, Sony Pictures came on board as the global distributor. Principal photography started on March 14, with most of the film shot in the small town of Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh, alongside the Narmada River. After filming in India, the crew moved to New York City to shoot pivotal scenes in iconic locations like Times Square, Lincoln Center, and the United Nations headquarters. Muruganantham was closely involved in the production, ensuring that every detail of his story was accurately portrayed, from the operation of his machine to his own posture. Originally set to premiere on January 25, 2018, during Republic Day celebrations, Pad Man was released in Indian theaters on February 9, 2018. It became the first Hindi film to debut in Russia on its original date. Upon its release, the film received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, achieving commercial success, especially in India and China, with a worldwide gross of ₹207.73 crore. The story begins with the marriage of Lakshmikant “Lakshmi” Chauhan and his beloved wife, Gayatri. Deeply in love and committed to her happiness, Lakshmi is taken aback when he learns that Gayatri is temporarily banished from the household during her menstrual cycle. Unaware of the realities of menstruation, he grows concerned when he sees her using an unhygienic rag. When he tries to discuss the matter, Gayatri firmly tells him that he should not interfere in women’s issues.
Determined to help, Lakshmi decides to buy sanitary pads for Gayatri, but discovers they are quite expensive. Gayatri insists he return them, arguing that spending money on such costly items would mean cutting back on essential household expenses, like milk. Disheartened, Lakshmi goes to work, where he faces a situation that changes his perspective. When a coworker gets injured, he instinctively uses a sanitary pad to stop the bleeding, despite others considering it “impure.” The doctor praises Lakshmi’s quick thinking, emphasizing that it is the cleanest option for treating the wound. Inspired, Lakshmi gathers cotton, cloth, and glue to create a homemade pad, believing it to be a more affordable alternative.
