Principal photography began in November 2016 in Queensland, Australia.[6] Pacific Rim Uprising premiered in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on March 15, 2018, and was released in the United States on March 23, by Universal Pictures (unlike its predecessor, which was released by Warner Bros. Pictures). With a gross of $290.9 million worldwide, the film was a box-office disappointment.[5] It also received mixed reviews; many critics considered it inferior to del Toro’s film and criticized its story, while praising its visual effects, action sequences, and performances of Boyega, Eastwood and Spaeny.[7][8] It was followed in 2021 by a 14-episode animated series on Netflix.

Pacific Rim: Uprising Movie Story

In 2035, a decade after the Battle of the Breach where the portal used by the Precursors to send Kaiju was sealed, Jake Pentecost, a former Jaeger pilot and son of the legendary Stacker Pentecost, is living on the fringes of society. He survives by stealing and selling Jaeger parts on the black market in Santa Monica, California. While tracking down a valuable part of a decommissioned Jaeger’s power core, Jake stumbles upon the secret workshop of Amara Namani, a 15-year-old Jaeger enthusiast who has built her own small, single-pilot Jaeger named Scrapper. After a skirmish with the law enforcement Jaeger, November Ajax, both Jake and Amara are arrested by the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps (PPDC). Jake’s adoptive sister, Mako Mori—now a Japanese senator—convinces him to return to the PPDC as a Jaeger instructor to avoid prison, with Amara joining the cadet program. At the China Shatterdome, Jake is reunited with his estranged former co-pilot, Nate Lambert, as they begin training a new generation of Jaeger pilots. Meanwhile, the Jaeger program faces competition from the Shao Corporation’s new drone initiative, led by Liwen Shao and Dr. Newton “Newt” Geiszler, which aims to mass-produce autonomous Jaeger drones.

Mako is set to deliver a critical assessment to the PPDC council in Sydney to decide the future of the drone program. However, during an encounter between Gipsy Avenger, Jake and Nate’s Jaeger, and a rogue Jaeger named Obsidian Fury, Mako is tragically killed before she can make her report. The PPDC, in response, approves the immediate deployment of the drones. Obsidian Fury escapes into the ocean before the backup Jaegers can capture it. Before her death, Mako had transmitted the coordinates of an old, defunct Jaeger production facility in Siberia. Jake and Nate head to the site in Gipsy Avenger, only to be confronted by Obsidian Fury. After a fierce battle, Gipsy Avenger gains the upper hand and defeats Obsidian Fury. Upon examining the wreckage, they discover that the rogue Jaeger was not piloted by humans, but controlled by a Kaiju’s secondary brain, which had been grown on Earth.

Pacific Rim: Uprising Movie Review

With more focus on the writing, Pacific Rim Uprising could have been much better. However, I actually enjoyed it more than the first film. Can you believe action movies can still embrace bright colors? This one definitely does! The first Pacific Rim, directed by Guillermo del Toro, was touted as groundbreaking, but I found it to be generic, dull, and visually unappealing. Its color palette was dominated by a dreary mix of brown and dark blue, creating a depressing atmosphere that clashed with the vibrant world it aimed to portray.

The main character in the first movie was also forgettable, fitting the mold of every other action hero we’ve seen since the 90s. In contrast, this sequel improves upon the color scheme and features John Boyega as a more charismatic and engaging lead. I enjoyed watching him clash with the other commanding character (I believe he’s played by Clint Eastwood’s son). The female character was also refreshing—she didn’t come off as a brat, which is often a common trope. However, once again, the script doesn’t give her character much depth. All I’m saying is that with a bit more care and attention to the writing, this film could have been truly great instead of just okay.
