In October 2020, Scott announced Napoleon as his next project. After delays and changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, filming began in the UK in February 2022 and lasted for several months. In addition to screenwriter David Scarpa, cameraman Dariush Wolski and editor Claire Simpson also worked closely with Scott. Napoleon premiered at the Salle Pleyel in Paris on November 14, 2023, and was released in the United States and the United Kingdom on November 22, 2023 by Columbia Pictures
, a Sony Pictures Releasing company, before streaming on Apple TV+ on March 1, 2024. The film grossed $221 million worldwide and received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the battle scenes and acting, but also criticized the film for historical inaccuracies. At the 96th Academy Awards, the film was nominated for Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Visual Effects.

In 1793, Napoleon Bonaparte witnessed the beheading of Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution. He managed the Siege of Toulon and suppressed the royalist insurrection. Napoleon married aristocratic widow Joséphine de Beauharnais, but they had no children. In 1798,
he defeated the Egyptians at the Battle of the Pyramids. In 1804, he was crowned Emperor of the French and defeated Austria and Russia at the Battle of Austerlitz. He divorced his mistress, Joséphine, in 1810, but married Marie Louise of Austria, who had a son. In 1812, Napoleon invaded Russia and defeated Alexander I, but lost half a million men. In 1814, the Coalition forced his abdication and exiled him to Elba.

I have always been a lifelong fan of Ridley Scott’s films and after seeing Napoleon tonight I wholeheartedly express all my respect and admiration for him. It is a very difficult historical story but the cinematography, editing, music, dialogue, it is compelling in every way and hats off to the cast for delivering such a great performance.
I agree that this is truly a masterpiece of cinematography and his best film of all time. I was incredibly moved and blown away by the quality of his storytelling and the sheer magnificence of the visuals. Every scene looked like a David painting that Scott must have studied extensively to realise this masterpiece. Bravo again to his mastery of his craft.
