Two decades of delays. In late 2010, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema began working on a new project, initially involving director Kevin Tancharoen and a script by Oren Uziel following the short film “Mortal Kombat: Rebirth” (2010). James Wan joined as a producer in August 2015, and McQuoid was brought on as director in November 2016. Filming took place at Adelaide Studios and various locations in South Australia from September to December 2019. “Mortal Kombat” was released internationally on April 8, 2021, and in the U.S. on April 23, both in theaters and on HBO Max. The film garnered mixed reviews; critics praised its performances, production quality, and action sequences, highlighting its greater fidelity to the source material compared to previous adaptations, but criticized its screenplay and dialogue. It grossed over $84 million against a $55 million budget and became HBO Max’s most successful film launch to date. A sequel, “Mortal Kombat 2,” is set to release on October 24, 2025, with Jeremy Slater writing the screenplay and McQuoid returning as director.

Mortal Kombat Movie Story

In “Mortal Kombat,” the story begins in 17th-century Japan, where assassin Bi-Han kills the clan of Hanzo Hasashi, who dies defending his family. Hanzo’s daughter is saved by Raiden, the god of Thunder. Fast forward to 2021, Earthrealm faces a dire threat: if it loses a tenth tournament against Outworld, it will be conquered. The sorcerer Shang Tsung seeks to eliminate Earthrealm’s champions, identifiable by a dragon mark. MMA fighter Cole Young, marked as a potential champion, is attacked by Sub-Zero, now Bi-Han. He’s rescued by Jax, who loses his arms in the fight. Cole finds Sonya Blade, who has captured Kano, an Australian mercenary. They are joined by Raiden and other champions, including Liu Kang and Kung Lao. While training, Kano awakens his power, but Cole struggles to unlock his own.

Shang Tsung’s forces attack Raiden’s temple, and during the battle, Jax gains superhuman strength. Cole eventually awakens his arcana during a fight with Goro, gaining enhanced abilities. As the conflict escalates, Sub-Zero kidnaps Cole’s family to lure him into a trap. In a climactic moment, Cole uses Hanzo’s kunai to summon Scorpion, Hanzo’s vengeful spirit. Together, they defeat Sub-Zero and rescue Cole’s family. After the battle, Shang Tsung threatens retaliation, but Raiden vows to train new champions, tasking Cole with finding Johnny Cage in Los Angeles to bolster their ranks for the next tournament.
