Life of Pi Movie Story
In Montreal, Canada, a writer meets Pi Patel, who has been suggested as a compelling subject for a book. Pi shares his story: Pi’s full name is Piscine Molitor Patel, named after a famous French swimming pool. To avoid bullying in secondary school in Pondicherry, he adopts the nickname “Pi.” Raised in a polytheistic Hindu family, Pi explores spirituality at a young age, embracing Christianity and Islam as well. He ultimately decides to follow all three religions, saying he “just wants to love God.” While his mother supports his spiritual exploration, his rationalist father attempts to steer him toward a more secular worldview. The family owns a zoo, where Pi becomes fascinated by a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. After getting dangerously close to the tiger, his father forces him to witness the brutal act of the tiger killing a goat.
At 16, Pi’s father announces they must move to Canada due to “The Emergency,” intending to settle there and sell the animals. They book passage on a Japanese freighter, taking the animals with them. During a storm, the ship sinks while Pi is on deck. In the chaos, a crewman throws him into a lifeboat, where he is joined by a wounded zebra that jumps in with him. Tragically, Pi’s family drowns as the ship sinks into the Mariana Trench. After the storm passes, Pi wakes up in the lifeboat with the zebra, which is soon joined by a Bornean orangutan. A spotted hyena appears from under a tarpaulin, driving Pi to the far end of the boat. The hyena kills the zebra and later the orangutan. Suddenly, Richard Parker emerges, killing the hyena before retreating to cover. To protect himself, Pi creates a small raft tethered to the lifeboat. Despite his moral reluctance to kill, he begins fishing to sustain both himself and Richard Parker. When the tiger jumps into the sea to hunt for fish and swims toward Pi, he contemplates letting him drown but ultimately pulls him back onto the boat. One night, a humpback whale destroys the raft and its supplies. Pi realizes that training Richard Parker to accept him in the boat is crucial for his own survival, as caring for the tiger helps keep him alive.
