Kaos Story

The narrator, Prometheus, recounts a prophecy that will dethrone Zeus, king of the gods, who rules the modern world. Eurydice (“Liddi”) meets Cassandra, who tells her that today is the day Liddi will leave her unloved husband, the musician Orpheus. Zeus’ son Dionysus wants more responsibility, but is rejected by both Zeus and his sister-in-law, Hera. He spitefully steals Zeus’ watch. Zeus, already enraged by the desecration of the Olympic Day monument by the mortal Trojans, is troubled by a small wrinkle on his forehead and summons Prometheus to assure him that the prophecy that foretells the end of his reign will not happen. Liddi visits his mother, Tacita, who tells him of Zeus’ prophecy that “lines will appear, order will disappear, families will fall apart, and chaos will reign.

This is the same as Liddy’s prophecy, but no two prophecies are alike. Liddy is run over by a truck and dies. Heartbroken, Orpheus attempts suicide, but Dionysus stops him and shows him how to be reunited with her.

Kaos Review

You can’t better, or certainly more succinctly, illustrate the overall mood of this production than to say that Jeff Goldblum plays Zeus. Casually dressed in a white suit, he roams happily through his vast palace and gardens on Mount Olympus, until one day, at the public unveiling of his new monument on the island of Crete, it is discovered that it has been desecrated by a band of Trojans. He then discovers a new wrinkle on his forehead, which he believes must be the first part of a prophecy fulfilled that will end his reign and bring chaos instead. As he seeks out his plan of revenge on mankind, all of his neuroses and insecurities begin to flare up (so much so that after a few episodes, it feels quite removed from his vulnerability for Goldblum, who is best known for roles based on unassailable cool). His wife, queen (and sister, asterisked in the on-screen subtitles) Hera – an appropriately commanding Janet McTeer.
