Hidden Figures Movie Story

In 1961, Katherine Goble works at the West Area Computers division of NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, alongside her colleagues Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan. These women, all African-American, are relegated to performing mathematical calculations without being informed of their purpose. The unit is segregated by both race and gender. Katherine, recognized for her expertise in analytic geometry, is assigned by her white supervisor, Vivian Mitchell, to assist Al Harrison’s Space Task Group. She becomes the first Black woman on the team, where she faces particular hostility from lead engineer Paul Stafford.

Meanwhile, Mary Jackson is placed on the space capsule heat shield team, where she quickly identifies a flaw in the design. Her team leader, Karl Zielinski, a Polish-Jewish Holocaust survivor, encourages her to pursue a NASA engineering position. However, despite her qualifications in mathematics and physical science, Mary learns from Mitchell that the position requires additional courses, which are only offered at the segregated, all-white Hampton High School. Undeterred, Mary files a petition to attend the school. Despite her husband’s concerns, she pleads her case in court, winning over the judge by appealing to his sense of history, ultimately securing permission to take night classes.

Hidden Figures Movie Review

The film showcases several key victories: solving the orbital equations, Mary Jackson convincing a judge to allow her to attend a segregated school to further her education, and Dorothy Vaughan mastering programming for the IBM mainframes. While these triumphs are uncomfortable to watch due to the overt racism and discrimination of the time, they are ultimately deeply satisfying. Without the perseverance and intelligence of these three brilliant women, the U.S. might have lagged behind the USSR in the space race. Their achievements are commendable, though it’s frustrating to see how racial bias nearly stood in the way of their success.

Katherine, in particular, is shown bearing an immense amount of pressure. In addition to her work, she is a widowed mother of three. Despite her long hours at NASA, her daughters remain remarkably supportive, demonstrating patience beyond their years. Even amid her demanding schedule, Katherine finds time to meet someone new and eventually remarries. These women embody the best of the American dream, persevering against extreme adversity to achieve greatness. Their story was long overdue to be told, and it’s gratifying to see it brought to a wide audience through this film.
