Development of the Halo television series began in mid-2013. Killen and Kane served as showrunners for the first season, which consists of nine episodes. Filming commenced in Ontario, Canada, in October 2019, but production on the first five episodes was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming later resumed in Budapest, Hungary, in February 2021. In February 2022, ahead of its premiere, the series was renewed for a second season, which David Wiener was set to lead as executive producer. Filming for the second season began in September 2022 and wrapped up in May 2023. The first season of Halo premiered on March 24, 2022, and concluded on May 19. It received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised the action scenes, cast performances, and visual effects, while noting criticisms regarding its derivative writing and deviations from the source material. The second season premiered on February 8, 2024, running for eight episodes until March 21. It also garnered positive reviews, with critics considering it an improvement over the first season. However, in July 2024, the series was canceled after two seasons.

Despite the numerous criticisms regarding how this TV show differs significantly from what fans of the Halo video game expected, and the various plot and character issues that arise upon closer examination, it actually offers a compelling viewing experience for those without much prior knowledge of the franchise.
One might argue that for a show to be good, everything must make sense, but that’s not necessarily the case, as this series demonstrates. Many viewers have found it to be quite impressive, even with claims of “poor design” from critics. Ultimately, the goal of watching a show is to be entertained; it doesn’t have to strictly adhere to 1) your preconceived notions, 2) a 1:1 comparison with the game, or 3) be entirely logical. What truly matters is whether it can capture the audience’s interest and evoke a sense of wonder, which this show certainly accomplishes with its stunning effects, costumes, and set design. While some may dismiss this as just an “opinion” from someone who isn’t overly concerned with every detail, I believe it’s important to appreciate something that genuinely looks good, regardless of the nitpicking.
