Great Teacher Onizuka, commonly abbreviated as GTO, is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tooru Fujisawa. Serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine from January 1997 to February 2002, the story spans 25 tankōbon volumes. It follows 22-year-old Eikichi Onizuka, an ex-bōsōzoku member who becomes a teacher at Holy Forest Academy, a private middle school in Tokyo. The series serves as a continuation of Fujisawa’s earlier works, Shonan Junai Gumi and Bad Company, which explore Onizuka’s life prior to his teaching career. Due to its popularity, GTO inspired multiple adaptations, including a 12-episode Japanese television drama that aired from July to September 1998, a live-action film directed by Masayuki Suzuki released in December 1999, and a 43-episode anime series produced by Pierrot that aired on Fuji TV from June 1999 to September 2000. Additionally, a second live-action series aired in Japan in 2012, followed by two more in 2014.
