January 2004, a gang of heavily armed men assaults a house in Wasseypur. After a fierce exchange of gunfire, they believe they have eliminated everyone inside. However, the leader (Pankaj Tripathi) discovers he has been double-crossed by minister J.P. Singh (Satya Anand), leading to a chaotic firefight as a police checkpoint blocks their escape. The scene transitions abruptly, with a prologue narrated by Nasir (Piyush Mishra), and this moment is later elaborated upon in the sequel.
Historically, Wasseypur and Dhanbad were part of the Bengal region during British rule. After India gained independence in 1947, they were reclassified under Bihar in 1956. In 2000, they were transferred again to the newly formed state of Jharkhand, where they remain today. The area has been predominantly influenced by the Qureshi Muslim community. During the colonial era, the British seized agricultural lands in Dhanbad for coal mining, marking the beginning of the region’s coal industry. This period also saw the rise of the infamous dacoit Sultana Qureshi, who became a folk hero by robbing British trains at night, earning a sense of patriotic admiration from the local populace.
