It won four Filmfare Awards out of nine nominations, along with two SIIMA Awards. Sai Pallavi’s performance was recognized by Film Companion as one of the 100 Greatest Performances of the Decade. Varun, a non-resident Indian living in Austin, Texas, shares his home with his elder brother Raju and his adopted younger brother Bujji. As a medical student aspiring to become a neurosurgeon, Varun travels to India with Bujji for Raju’s wedding to Renuka, whose family is from Banswada in Telangana. During this visit, Varun meets Bhanumathi, Renuka’s younger sister. Bhanu is a beautiful and confident girl who values her independence and doesn’t want to feel secondary to anyone. As Varun and Bhanu spend time together, they develop feelings for each other, but neither expresses them.
Bhanu is deeply attached to her father and is determined not to leave him after marriage. One day, she overhears Varun discussing opportunities in the US with his cousin Shailu, expressing doubts about settling in India. Misunderstanding his comments about a potential marriage between Shailu and her boyfriend as a proposal involving Varun and Shailu, Bhanu feels betrayed and heartbroken. In an effort to suppress her feelings, she starts ignoring Varun.After Raju’s wedding, Varun returns to the US, but he can’t stop thinking about Bhanu. He decides to confess his love, but when he does, Bhanu responds harshly, which angers Varun and deepens the rift between them. Despite the conflict, Bhanu agrees to marry a man chosen by her father but soon realizes she is uncomfortable with the decision, even before the marriage takes place.
