Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry (Japanese: 劇場版 FAIRY TAIL -DRAGON CRY-, Hepburn: Gekijō-ban Fearī Teiru: Doragon Kurai, lit. “Theatrical Feature Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry”) is a 2017 Japanese animated fantasy action-comedy film, and the second movie based on the popular Fairy Tail manga series by Hiro Mashima. Directed by Tatsuma Minamikawa with a screenplay by Shōji Yonemura, both of whom had previously worked on the anime series, the film serves as a sequel to 2012’s Fairy Tail the Movie: Phoenix Priestess. Hiro Mashima, the creator of the Fairy Tail manga, contributed to the project by providing storyboards and acting as chief producer for the film.

The story of Dragon Cry takes place between the penultimate and final arcs of the Fairy Tail series. It follows the members of the Fairy Tail wizard guild as they embark on a mission to the Kingdom of Stella to retrieve a stolen artifact known as the Dragon Cry—a magical staff of immense, destructive power capable of unleashing cataclysmic events. Natsu Dragneel, Lucy Heartfilia, and their guildmates must navigate the dangerous politics of Stella and prevent the staff from being used for evil purposes.The film sees the return of the voice cast from the anime series, including Tetsuya Kakihara (Natsu), Aya Hirano (Lucy), Rie Kugimiya (Happy), Yuichi Nakamura (Gray), Sayaka Ōhara (Erza), Satomi Satō (Wendy), and Yui Horie (Carla). In Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry, the Fairy Tail guild returns to the Kingdom of Stella to recover the powerful artifact known as the Dragon Cry staff, defeating the formidable trio known as the Three Stars in the process. During this confrontation, Sonya, a key character in the story, touches the Dragon Cry and recognizes its true nature, validating Natsu’s earlier warnings. Despite the threat posed by Animus, who desires the staff for his own nefarious purposes, Sonya refuses to hand it over. As Natsu arrives, he finds Sonya speaking to herself, only to discover that Animus has taken control of her body. It is revealed that Animus is a dragon who had sealed himself within Sonya to escape death, appearing in a human guise to manipulate her. Struggling to free himself, Animus attempts a ritual to use the staff’s magic, but is thwarted when Zash, seeking revenge against Fiore for his exile, steals the staff for himself. Zash harnesses the staff’s power to activate an army of artificial soldiers to wage war against Fairy Tail and aims to destroy Fiore, but his plans come to an end when the staff’s magic overwhelms him, resulting in his death.
In a climactic battle for the staff, Animus impales Natsu with one of his spikes and absorbs the staff’s magic, restoring his full strength. Although gravely injured, Natsu survives, transforming part of his body into that of a dragon. This new power enables him to unleash a furious assault on Animus, who recognizes Natsu as E.N.D., the “destroyer of all.” Ultimately, Natsu triumphs over Animus, but the transformation leaves him shaken. However, Lucy Heartfilia is there to comfort him as he grapples with the changes.
