Damsels is a 2024 American dark fantasy film directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and written by Dan Mazo. Millie Bobby Brown plays Elodie, a young woman who accepts a marriage proposal but finds herself being used to pay off an old debt to the royal family, and must flee while surviving an attack by a dragon lurking in a ravine. The rest of the principal cast includes Ray Winstone, Nick Robinson, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Angela Bassett, and Robin Wright.

Damsels was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo from a screenplay by Dan Mazo, and produced by Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum through their Netflix production company. Emily Ballou and Mark Bomback were credited for “additional literary material” off-screen.
In November 2020, Millie Bobby Brown was cast as Princess Elodie. She was also named as an executive producer on the film. In April 2022, it was reported that the cast included Angela Bassett, Nick Robinson, Robin Wright, Ray Winstone, Brooke Carter, and Shohreh Aghdashloo.
Principal photography took place in early 2022. The cave scenes were shot at the Troubadour Meridian Water Studios in London. Filming also took place in Tomar, Sortelha, Serra da Estrela, and Batalha Monastery in Portugal.
The dragon was designed by Patrick Tatopoulos.

The first king of Aurea leads a futile attack on the dragon that inhabits the kingdom. All of the king’s men are killed and the king is left at the mercy of the dragon.
Centuries later, Lord Bayford’s adolescent daughter Elodie receives a marriage proposal from Queen Isabel of Aurea to marry her son, Prince Henry. At her father’s urging, Elodie agrees to the marriage, using her bride price to help the poor. Upon arriving in Aurea, Elodie and Henry are not interested in each other at first, but they begin to grow closer as they share a love of travel. Elodie’s stepmother, Lady Bayford, is suspicious of Queen Isabel’s motives and pleads with Elodie to break off the engagement, to no avail.

Damsel may roar onto the screen with a typical princess-in-peril setup, but this Netflix film cleverly subverts expectations. Millie Bobby Brown delivers a stunning performance as Princess Elodie, who faces a fate far worse than a cranky dragon.
The best part of Damsel is its unexpected emotional depth. The film explores themes involving sacrifice, understanding, the complexities of relationships, and even a fire-breathing beast. While action and humor keep things lively, the heart of the story lies in the bond that forms between Elodie and the dragon, a creature with its own tragic background. Sure, the CGI may not be up to the level of a Hollywood blockbuster, but the production design is impressive the dragon’s lair is astounding, the costumes rich and detailed but the real magic is in the performances. Brown is phenomenal, showing both vulnerability and fierce determination, and the voices of the supporting cast, especially Shohreh Aghdashloo as the dragon, add an extra layer of tension to the story. “Damsel” isn’t perfect — the plot can meander at times, and some may find the resolution a little predictable but the film’s charm is in how it surprises you.
