Channel Zero is an American Horror anthology television series created by Nick Antosca, who serves as the writer, showrunner, and executive producer. The series was greenlit for two self-contained seasons, each consisting of six episodes, which aired in late 2016 and late 2017 on Syfy. The storylines are inspired by popular creepypastas. On February 9, 2017, Syfy renewed the series for a third and fourth season.

The series premiered on October 11, 2016. The first installment, based on Kris Straub’s Candle Cove, stars Paul Schneider and Fiona Shaw and was directed by Craig William Macneill. It focuses on a man’s obsessive recollection of a mysterious children’s television program from the 1980s. The second season, which premiered on September 20, 2017, is based on Brian Russell’s The No-End House and directed by Steven Piet. The third season, titled Butcher’s Block, premiered on February 7, 2018, and is based on Kerry Hammond’s Search and Rescue Woods, directed by Arkasha Stevenson. The fourth season, The Dream Door, aired from October 26 to 31, 2018, based on Charlotte Bywater’s Hidden Door and directed by E. L. Katz. On January 16, 2019, Syfy announced the cancellation of Channel Zero after four seasons. A child psychologist returns to his hometown to investigate whether his brother’s disappearance is linked to a series of similar cases and a strange children’s television show that was broadcast during the same period.

Child psychologist Mike Painter returns to his hometown of Iron Hill, Ohio, nearly thirty years after an unknown serial killer took the lives of five local children, including his twin brother, Eddie, whose body was never found. With only his mother, Marla, still living in the area, Mike reconnects with childhood friends Jessica and Gary, who is now the town sheriff, and meets their daughter, Katie. During a dinner together, Mike brings up Candle Cove, a disturbing children’s television series featuring puppet pirates that aired around the time of the murders before suddenly going off the air. To Mike’s surprise, Katie claims she has recently seen the show.
The following day, Katie goes missing, and Mike quickly becomes a suspect. Through Katie’s brother, Dane, Mike learns where he might find her. He follows a figure dressed as a skeleton, reminiscent of a character from the show, and eventually discovers Katie alive in the woods where the tragic events unfolded. As he carries her back to safety, he is oblivious to the fact that Katie has left two of her teeth behind for a mysterious creature, made entirely of teeth. Marla later reveals to Mike that when he and Eddie were watching Candle Cove as children, they were actually just looking at static on the television.
Channel Zero Review
I read the original Candle Cove creepypasta online a few years ago and really enjoyed it. The TV series is a sympathetic adaptation that captures the essence of the story well. Mike is portrayed brilliantly; his character is quite different from the original tale, where he was just one of the commenters. Here, he takes center stage, which adds an intriguing layer to the narrative. You’re left questioning his true nature for quite a while—Is he crazy? Deluded? Sane but a psychotic murderer? Innocent? Or is he fooling everyone? It’s hard to say!
If you’re in the mood for something creepy, I definitely recommend this series. The characters from the ‘cove’ are genuinely terrifying, especially if you have nightmares about teeth; it will really unsettle you! Despite that, I still think it’s worth watching!
