Bullet Train Movie Story

Yuichi Kimura, known as “The Father,” boards a bullet train in Tokyo, determined to find the person responsible for attacking his son, Wataru. At the same time, operative “Ladybug,” guided by his handler Maria Beetle, is tasked with retrieving a briefcase full of cash from the same train, filling in for a sick colleague named Carver. Ladybug is hesitant to take on this assignment due to his recent string of misfortunes, which have resulted in accidental deaths during his jobs. Onboard the train are two British assassin brothers, codenamed “Lemon” and “Tangerine,” who have just rescued a young boy, referred to as “The Son,” from kidnappers. They are escorting him and the briefcase to his father, a Russian-born Yakuza crime lord known as “The White Death.” As the journey progresses, The Son is killed by poisoning. In the chaos, Ladybug discreetly takes the briefcase but is confronted by an assassin called “The Wolf,” who recognizes him from a wedding where his wife was murdered. Mistakenly believing Ladybug to be one of her killers, The Wolf attacks, but in the ensuing struggle, he accidentally kills himself with a knife throw that deflects back at him.

Meanwhile, Yuichi discovers that a young woman known as “The Prince” pushed Wataru. However, she cleverly manipulates him, luring him onto the train with a scheme to make him kill his boss, the White Death. To enforce her control, she has a henchman holding Wataru hostage in the hospital. Recognizing Lemon from a previous job in Johannesburg that went awry, Ladybug proposes to return the briefcase in exchange for his freedom. Lemon, believing he may have unintentionally caused The Son’s death, engages in a fight with Ladybug, during which Ladybug manages to knock Lemon unconscious and spiking his water with a sleeping powder to prevent further complications.

Bullet Train Movie Review

Based on the novel of the same name by Kōtarō Isaka, both the writer and screenwriter Zak Olkewicz deserve commendation for their impressive world-building in Bullet Train. Each character brings a unique blend of humor and eccentricity to the narrative. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry excel as the assassin duo known as the twins, while the ever-reliable Hiroyuki Sanada and the exceptionally talented Joey King deliver standout performances in their supporting roles. The film features numerous cameos and guest appearances that appear unexpectedly, keeping audiences engaged throughout.

Bullet Train represents the much-needed revival of the action genre in Hollywood, reaffirming that gritty, R-rated films are best experienced on the big screen. In contrast, streaming offerings like Red Notice (2021), The Man From Toronto (2022), and The Gray Man (2022) often fall flat due to shortcuts taken in scripting and staging for at-home viewing. This film is a refreshing action-comedy from Hollywood, making it a highly recommended watch in theaters!
