Dhanush announced the film’s title and a poster on December 21, 2018, with filming set to begin in January 2019. The film features a dual role for Dhanush, showcasing both a father and son in the narrative.Released on October 4, 2019, Asuran achieved significant commercial success at the box office and was well-received by critics. The film won two awards at the 67th National Film Awards, including Best Feature Film in Tamil and Best Actor for Dhanush. The story begins with the introduction of Sivasaami, a hardworking farmer, and his son Chidambaram. Sivasaami’s family includes his devoted wife, Pachaiyamma, her brother Murugesan, their daughter Lakshmi, and their older son, Velmurugan. They reside in Thekkoor, a village primarily inhabited by Dalits. While Sivasaami shares a strong bond with Velmurugan, his relationship with Chidambaram is strained and often characterized by conflict and abuse.
The plot thickens when Narasimhan, an upper-caste landlord from the neighboring village of Vadakoor, sets his sights on acquiring Sivasaami’s three acres of land to construct a factory. Velmurugan, fiercely protective of their family legacy, staunchly opposes the sale of the land. Tensions escalate dramatically when Narasimhan’s son assaults Pachaiyamma.
