Asur (pronounced translating to “Demon”) is an Indian Hindi-language psychological crime thriller streaming television series. The first season, produced by Tanveer Bookwala, premiered on Voot on March 2, 2020, while the second season, produced by Bombay Fables, Sejal Shah, Bhavesh Mandalia, and Gaurav Shukla, debuted on JioCinema on June 1, 2023.

The series follows a team of forensic experts tasked with apprehending a serial killer who believes he is the incarnation of the asura Kali. The cast includes Arshad Warsi and Barun Sobti, along with Anupriya Goenka, Riddhi Dogra, and Amey Wagh. Sharib Hashmi played a prominent role in the first season, while Meiyang Chang and Abhishek Chauhan joined the main cast in the second season. Asur follows forensic expert and teacher Nikhil Nair as he returns to his roots at the Central Bureau of Investigation. Along with his former mentor Dhananjay Rajpoot, Nair finds himself caught in a game of cat and mouse with a brutal serial killer.

In a scene from the past, it is shown that a young boy poisons his father to death. Nikhil Nair, a forensic expert, is currently teaching forensic science at the FBI in the United States. He lives with his daughter Riya and his wife Naina. Nikhil dislikes teaching. He has fond memories of working for the CBI in India. Nikhil has been receiving coordinates from an unidentified source for some time, and he sends them to his CBI friend Lolark Dubey. Later, these coordinates yield bodies. After a hiatus of five years, Nikhil returns to the CBI before setting out for India. In place of Dhananjay Rajput,
he is assigned a case involving multiple murders. Surprisingly, the most recent victim is the wife of his former teacher and mentor, Dhananjay Rajput DJ, with whom he had previously broken up due to ethical concerns. The latest homicide turns out to have been committed by DJ himself. The boy was referred to as an Asur (demon) and a rakshas by his father in the flashback. Although the boy’s mother passed away before he was born, he possesses extraordinary intelligence. He can pick up anything by reading it once. Lal Thanjana, Sandhya’s killer, is currently committing suicide in Dimapur, Nagaland. Rasool DJ, a cyber expert, and Nikhil’s circumstantial evidence lead to his arrest for the murders of Lal and Sandhya.
Asur: Welcome to Your Dark Side Review
Hands down, Asur is one of the most engaging series I’ve ever watched. The cast delivers top-notch performances, and the story is exceptionally well-written. While shows about serial killing are quite common, this one stands out by incorporating Hindu mythology with psychological elements. Barun Sobti was a delight to watch, fully embodying the character of Nikhil Nair. He’s undoubtedly one of the most talented actors in Indian television. Arshad Warsi also played a significant role in making the show captivating, delivering an impressive performance as Dhananjay Rajput.
Ridhi Dogra brought a beautiful presence to the series, with her calm demeanor balancing out the more intense performances from the male characters. Anupriya Goenka added to this dynamic as well.I believe this show could have gained even more popularity if it had been released on Netflix or Prime Video, as those platforms have a broader audience than Voot.
