A Silent Voice (Japanese: 聲の形, Hepburn: Koe no Katachi, lit. ‘Shape of Voice’) is a 2016 Japanese animated drama film based on the manga by Yoshitoki Ōima. Produced by Kyoto Animation and directed by Naoko Yamada, the film features a screenplay by Reiko Yoshida, character designs by Futoshi Nishiya, and a musical score by Kensuke Ushio. Plans for the adaptation were announced in November 2014, with Kyoto Animation confirmed as the producer in November 2015. Voice actors Miyu Irino and Saori Hayami joined the cast in May 2016, and the film’s promotional materials were released in July 2016. A Silent Voice explores themes of bullying, disability, forgiveness, mental health, suicide, and cross-gender friendship, following a former bully who seeks to reconnect with the deaf girl he tormented in his youth.
