“Blue Exorcist” (青の祓魔師エクソシスト, Ao no Ekusoshisuto) is a Japanese dark fantasy manga series created by Kazue Kato. The story follows Rin Okumura, a teenager who learns that he and his twin brother, Yukio, are the sons of Satan, born from a human woman. After Satan kills their guardian, Rin enrolls at True Cross Academy to train as an exorcist under Yukio’s guidance, with the ultimate goal of defeating their father. Serialized in Shueisha’s shōnen magazine Jump Square since April 2009, the manga has been collected into 31 tankōbon volumes as of June 2024. Viz Media has licensed the series for North American distribution, releasing the first volume in April 2011. The manga has also been adapted into an anime series produced by A-1 Pictures, which aired from April to October 2011, along with a film titled “Blue Exorcist: The Movie,” released in December 2012. A second season, “Kyoto Saga,” aired from January to March 2017, and a third season, “Shimane Illuminati Saga,” premiered in January 2024. A fourth season, “Beyond the Snow Saga,” is set to begin in October 2024, with a second part, “The Blue Night Saga,” scheduled for January 2025. As of December 2022, “Blue Exorcist” had over 25 million copies in circulation, establishing it as one of the best-selling manga series, with its popularity boosted by the anime adaptations.
