Gintama (銀魂, lit. ’Silver Soul’) is a Japanese manga series created by Hideaki Sorachi, serialized in Shueisha’s shōnen magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump from December 2003 to September 2018, before continuing in Jump Giga until February 2019 and concluding on the Gintama app from May to June 2019. The series comprises 77 tankōbon volumes and is set in a version of Edo that has been conquered by aliens known as Amanto. It follows the adventures of Gintoki Sakata, a samurai who operates as a freelancer in his self-established business, “Yorozuya,” along with his friends Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura, taking on a variety of odd jobs. Sorachi incorporated a science fiction setting to enhance character development after his editor suggested a historical theme. The franchise has been adapted into an original video Animation (OVA) by Sunrise, which was featured at Jump Festa 2006 anime Tour in 2005. This led to a full 367-episode anime television series that aired from April 2006 to October 2018, along with three animated films: the first in April 2010, the second in July 2013, and the third in January 2021. In addition to the anime, various light novels and video games have been produced based on Gintama. A live-action film adaptation premiered in Japan in July 2017. The manga has been licensed for North America by Viz Media, which has published the individual volumes and serialized its initial chapters in their Shonen Jump anthology. Sentai Filmworks initially licensed the series, while Crunchyroll later acquired the anime’s streaming and home video rights.
