“Made in Abyss” (Japanese: メイドインアビス, Hepburn: Meido in Abisu) is a Japanese manga series created by Akihito Tsukushi, serialized online in Takeshobo’s digital publication Web Comic Gamma since October 2012 and collected in 13 tankōbon volumes. The story centers on an orphaned girl named Riko, who befriends a part-robot boy named Reg, as they descend into the mysterious “Abyss,” hoping to explore its depths and find Riko’s mother. The series was adapted into an anime television series by Kinema Citrus, which aired from July to September 2017. This was followed by a sequel film, “Dawn of the Deep Soul,” which premiered in Japan in January 2020, and a second season titled “Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun,” airing from July to September 2022. A sequel to this second season has been announced. Additionally, a Western live-action film adaptation began development in 2021, with Kevin McMullin attached as writer and director. An action role-playing game by Chime Corporation was released in September 2022. By February 2020, the manga had over three million copies in circulation, and in 2023, it won the 52nd Japan Cartoonists Association Award.
