The story follows four street magicians—Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), Merritt McKinney (Woody Harrelson), Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher), and Jack Wilder (Dave Franco)—who are mysteriously brought together to form a group called “The Four Horsemen.” Sponsored by a wealthy benefactor, Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine), they put on grand, live shows where they pull off seemingly impossible heists, like robbing a bank in Paris while performing in Las Vegas and distributing the stolen money to their audience.
FBI agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) and Interpol detective Alma Dray (Mélanie Laurent) are assigned to investigate the magicians. Despite being convinced that the magicians are criminals, they find themselves constantly outwitted by the illusionists, who always stay one step ahead. Adding to the mystery, Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman), a former magician-turned-debunker of magic tricks, attempts to expose their methods while following the Four Horsemen’s movements.
