Originally, Walt Disney Studios purchased the rights to adapt the novel in the 1990s, but the project remained in development limbo for years. Eventually, Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the rights and green-lit the film in 2013. By September 2014, Turteltaub and much of the cast had joined. Principal photography took place between October 2016 and January 2017, with filming locations in New Zealand and China. Released in the United States on August 10, 2018, The Meg received mixed reviews but became a box office success, grossing over $530 million worldwide on a $130 million budget. A sequel, Meg 2: The Trench, was released in 2023, with Georgaris and the Hoebers returning as writers, and Statham, Curtis, Sophia Cai, and Page Kennedy reprising their roles.

Zhang and Jonas’ old friend, James “Mac” Mackreides, the operations manager of Mana One, travel to Thailand to recruit Jonas, who has become a recluse. Meanwhile, Suyin attempts a rescue mission but is attacked by a giant squid, which is soon killed by an enormous shark. Jonas dives in to save the crew, but Toshi sacrifices himself to the shark, allowing the others to escape.
The Mana One team discovers that the massive predator is a megalodon, or “Meg,” a prehistoric species of shark thought to be long extinct. Realizing that the Meg pursued them past the thermocline, they decide to kill it, understanding that modern technology is no match for such an ancient beast. After Jonas attaches a tracker to it, Suyin enters a shark-proof cage to poison the Meg, successfully killing it. However, their victory is short-lived. A second, larger Meg—revealed to be the one they first encountered in the trench—emerges, devouring The Wall and the dead Meg. It fatally wounds Dr. Minway Zhang, and Dr. Heller sacrifices himself to save another crew member as their ship capsizes. Tragically, Dr. Zhang dies on the way to get help.
