Filming began on May 1, 2014, in Mysore, with most scenes shot at Ramoji Film City and Annapurna Studios, along with some portions in Chennai. Flashback scenes were filmed at various locations in Karnataka, while the climax was set at Linganamakki Dam and Jog Falls in Shimoga. The entire shooting was completed in six months. Released on December 12, 2014, to coincide with Rajinikanth’s birthday, Lingaa was dubbed in Telugu and Hindi under the same title. The film received mixed reviews; critics praised Rajinikanth’s performance, the cinematography, action sequences, and music but criticized its script, climax, and length. Due to British greed, Lingeswaran was falsely accused after completing the dam and was banished from his village. When the villagers learned the truth, they attempted to bring him back, but he refused, content that his work on the dam would endure. In response, Karunakara’s father vowed to keep the temple Lingeswaran built closed until his return, a promise Karunakara upheld. Upon discovering the truth about his grandfather, Lingaa resolves to change his ways and agrees to help Karunakara save the dam. Nagabooshan attempts to thwart them by bribing another inspector, but Lingaa, Karunakara, and Lakshmi stand united against him. Lingaa reveals a pen drive hidden by the previous inspector in the temple, which he found during a break-in. Although Nagabooshan tries to erase the file, Lingaa’s friends have already published it online, ensuring the report’s survival. Lingaa also exposes Nagabooshan’s schemes, having suspected him and instructed Lakshmi to gather proof, leading to Nagabooshan’s downfall.
In a desperate move, Nagabooshan kidnaps Lakshmi and escapes in a hot air balloon rigged with a bomb aimed at destroying the dam. Lingaa manages to board the balloon, kicking Nagabooshan out and causing his demise. He then kicks the bomb into the reservoir, saving the dam. As Lingaa prepares to leave the village to pursue a respectable life like his grandfather, the police catch up to him, intending to arrest him for his past crimes. In a surprising turn, the police decide to let him go due to his heroic actions. Lakshmi joins Lingaa, and together they embark on a new chapter.
