Thaanaa Serndha Koottam (transl. ”A Crowd That Gathered on Its Own”) is a 2018 Indian Tamil-language crime comedy film directed by Vignesh Shivan. Starring Suriya, alongside Karthik, Ramya Krishnan, Keerthy Suresh, Nandha, Kalaiyarasan, RJ Balaji, and Suresh Chandra Menon, the film features music by Anirudh Ravichander. The cinematography was handled by Dinesh B. Krishnan, and editing was done by A. Sreekar Prasad. The film is a remake of the 2013 Hindi film Special 26, which was inspired by the real-life 1987 Opera House heist in Mumbai. Principal photography began in September 2016 and wrapped up in August 2017. Following the success of Neeraj Pandey’s Special 26 (2013), several filmmakers expressed interest in producing a Tamil version of the film. Linguswamy acquired the rights and aimed to collaborate with Friday Filmworks, the production company behind the original. Initial discussions included prominent actors like Kamal Haasan, Suriya, Karthi, and Vikram for the lead role, alongside Sathyaraj, but the project did not materialize. In August 2014, producer Thiagarajan announced he had acquired the remake rights for Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada, with plans to direct all four versions. His son, Prashanth, was initially set to star in the Tamil adaptation, supported by Prakash Raj and Sathyaraj. By March 2015, it was announced that Srikanth Ravichandran, then-husband of television host Divyadarshini, would take over as director. He began working on the music compositions with Thaman and revealed that actress Trisha would play the female lead. However, after a period of inactivity, Prashanth informed the media in September 2015 that filming would commence soon under director Madhesh.
