Produced by Cape of Good Films, Hope Productions, Fox Star Studios, Aruna Bhatia, and Anil Naidu, the film is loosely inspired by the scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) who played key roles in India’s first interplanetary mission, the Mars Orbiter Mission. Shakti, who worked as an associate director on Kumar’s 2018 film Pad Man, presented the script to him, leading to the start of principal photography in November 2018. Rakesh learns that the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) cannot launch using the PSLV due to its payload limit of just 1500 kg, which is inadequate for the nearly 55 million-kilometer journey. The GSLV, with its 2300 kg capacity, could have successfully delivered the satellite to Mars, but recent failures of the GSLV have jeopardized future missions.
Meanwhile, Tara is caught in the crossfire of ongoing tensions between her husband, Sunil, and their son, Dilip, who is increasingly drawn to his namesake, A. R. Rahman, and is exploring Islam. Dilip also shows a keen interest in the Mars Mission. One day, while preparing pooris and running low on gas, Tara decides to finish cooking with the flame off. This sparks an innovative idea about conserving fuel for the PSLV launch. Despite Rupert’s objections, Rakesh is reluctantly assigned a junior team to assist him and Tara.
