Eega (translated as The Fly) is a 2012 Indian Telugu-language fantasy action film written and directed by S. S. Rajamouli. Produced by Sai Korrapati’s Vaaraahi Chalana Chitram, the film had an estimated budget of ₹30–40 crore (approximately $6–7 million). It was filmed simultaneously in Tamil under the title Naan Ee (translated as I, the Fly). The cast includes Nani, Samantha, and Sudeepa, with music and background score composed by M. M. Keeravani. K. K. Senthil Kumar served as the cinematographer, while Janardhana Maharshi and Crazy Mohan wrote the dialogues for the Telugu and Tamil versions, respectively. The film’s concept originated in the mid-1990s during a conversation between Rajamouli’s father, screenwriter V. Vijayendra Prasad, and Rajamouli, who joked about a fly seeking revenge against a human. The idea was revisited after Rajamouli completed Maryada Ramanna (2010) and evolved into a full script. Production commenced on December 7, 2010, at Ramanaidu Studios in Hyderabad, with principal photography starting on February 22, 2011, and wrapping up in late February 2012. Visual effects were managed by Makuta VFX, with digital processes handled by Annapurna Studios. The Telugu and Tamil versions, along with a Malayalam-dubbed edition titled Eecha, premiered on July 6, 2012, across approximately 1,100 screens globally. Upon release, the performances of the cast—especially Nani, Sudeep, and Samantha—alongside Rajamouli’s direction and the film’s visual effects, received widespread acclaim. Eega emerged as one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of the year, earning over ₹125 crore (around $23 million). The film won two National Film Awards for Best Feature Film in Telugu and Best Special Effects, as well as five South Filmfare Awards, including Best Telugu Film, Best Director, Best Actress (Samantha), and Best Supporting Actor (Sudeep). Hyderabad-based young man Nani specializes in fireworks preparation. He is in love with Bindu, a microartist who runs the non-governmental organization Project 511 and lives next door to him. In addition, Bindu develops romantic feelings for Nani without expressing them. Bindu goes to the office of Sudeep, a powerful and wealthy industrialist, to raise money for her NGO. Sudeep also finds Bindu attractive and starts lusting after her. He makes a donation of 15 lakh (US$28,000) and becomes her friend. Because she is unaware of his intentions, Sudeep’s attempts to woo her over the course of the following days fail miserably. He realizes they are attracted to each other when he sees Nani following Bindu on the street one day. Sudeep intends to kill Nani because he sees him as a rival. Bindu is motivated to assist Nani in finishing a piece of micro art—a pencil-made heart locket—one evening. Sudeep kidnaps Nani and strangles him to death while returning home, making his death appear accidental. Nani curses Sudeep and vows to kill him if he tries to hurt Bindu before dying. Bindu calls and confesses her love for the dying Nani without realizing what happened; It is the final sound Nani hears before he is reincarnated as a housefly that has lost memory.
When the fly sees Sudeep and Bindu, its memory is triggered, and it begins to focus on getting revenge on Sudeep. Bindu, who is devastated, agrees to go with Sudeep to New Delhi to meet the education minister; He may assist the NGO in gaining national recognition if she is able to captivate the minister with a presentation about it. The fly writes “I will kill you” on the windshield and causes Sudeep to have a freak accident on his way to the airport; Sudeep becomes paranoid as a result. When the fly sees Bindu in her bedroom writing about Nani’s death on the desk, it pretends to be Nani. It tells Bindu about the circumstances surrounding Nani’s death, and they team up to fight Sudeep. His personal and professional lives are impacted by the latter’s fervent interest in the fly. His black money is destroyed in a series of events, rendering him virtually penniless.
