Manjhi: The Mountain Man Movie Story

In the 1960s, Dashrath Manjhi (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui) lived in the small village of Gehlaur near Gaya, Bihar, India, with his family, including his wife, Phaguniya Devi (Radhika Apte), and their son. The village was bordered by a rocky mountain that forced residents to either climb over it or travel around it to access medical care in the nearest town, Wazirganj. Tragically, one day, while pregnant, Phaguniya fell while trying to cross the mountain and died during childbirth. This devastating loss ignited Manjhi’s determination to carve a road through the mountain.

Despite being ridiculed as a lunatic for his efforts, Manjhi’s resolve only grew stronger. Over the course of 22 years of grueling labor, he successfully created a path that was 360 feet long, up to 25 feet deep in places, and 30 feet wide. Manjhi passed away in 2007. The film’s postscript reveals that, 52 years after he began breaking the mountain, 30 years after completing it, and four years after his death, the government finally constructed a metalled road to Gehlaur in 2011. Throughout his life, he fought tirelessly with the Indian government for the development of his village and for access to hospitals and roads.

Manjhi: The Mountain Man Movie Review

This is an immortal and true love story. Manjhi created a monument of love more beautiful than the Taj Mahal, yet only a few can truly understand his plight. It’s a highly motivational film that teaches us that “breaking a mountain is even more difficult.” If he could accomplish such a monumental task, then anything is possible. This is a must-watch film, and I bow my head in respect to the great Dashrath Manjhi, as well as to Ketan sir and his entire team.
