Uttama Villain (translated as “The Righteous Villain”) is a 2015 Indian Tamil-language comedy-drama film directed by Ramesh Aravind and written by Kamal Haasan. The film was presented by N. Lingusamy in collaboration with Kamal Haasan and produced by S. Chandrahasan for Raaj Kamal Films International and N. Subash Chandrabose for Thirupathi Brothers Film Media. It features a talented ensemble cast, including Kamal Haasan, K. Viswanath, K. Balachander, Jayaram, Andrea Jeremiah, Pooja Kumar, Nassar, Parvathy Thiruvothu, and Urvashi. Notably, this film serves as a posthumous tribute to actor and director K. Balachander, who passed away in December 2014.

The story follows superstar Manoranjan (Kamal Haasan), who learns he has a brain tumor and limited time to live. He approaches his mentor, director Margadarisi (K. Balachander), to helm his next project—a folklore-inspired comedy about a man who consistently cheats death while playing a crucial role in saving a kingdom. As he navigates this new project, Manoranjan also grapples with his personal life, including an estranged son and a daughter from his true love. The project was initiated in late 2013, with principal photography starting on March 3, 2014. Filming took place across Chennai, Bengaluru, and Turkey, concluding on August 9, 2014. The cinematography was managed by Shamdat, while Vijay Shankar handled the editing. The music for the film was composed by Ghibran, marking his first collaboration with Kamal Haasan, and the soundtrack received widespread acclaim upon its release.

Manoranjan is a leading film star adored by his fans but grappling with numerous personal issues. Twenty-five years ago, he was compelled to marry Varalakshmi, the daughter of renowned film director Poornachandra Rao, despite being in love with another woman, Yamini (who is not depicted on-screen). His relationship with his son, Manohar, from his marriage to Varalakshmi is strained. Compounding his troubles, Manoranjan discovers that he has a daughter named Manonmani, born out of wedlock during his affair with Yamini, and raised by Yamini’s husband, Jacob Zachariah, after Yamini’s passing. Recently, he is diagnosed with advanced brain cancer and given only a few months to live—a fact kept from his family. He is treated by his family doctor, Dr. Arpana, with whom he is having an extramarital affair.
Faced with these revelations, Manoranjan decides to withdraw from a film produced by Poornachandra Rao and instead produce and star in a film directed by his mentor, Margadarsi. The two had a falling out when Manoranjan married Varalakshmi and began working on films produced by Poornachandra Rao, Margadarsi’s rival. Despite their past differences, Manoranjan wants Margadarsi to direct his final film. Initially, Margadarsi refuses but is moved when he learns from Arpana about Manoranjan’s terminal illness and ultimately agrees to direct the film. When Poornachandra Rao and Varalakshmi discover Manoranjan’s plan, they are furious and leave his home with Manohar. Undeterred, Manoranjan forges ahead with his film.

I watched this movie in the theater, and after six years, I’m thrilled to see it again. It’s truly one of the best films out there. Once a lion, always a lion! Andavare, you’re incredible, but it’s unfortunate that you were born in the Tamil industry, where many still lack the understanding of which films deserve celebration. You’ve consistently delivered your best. Gibran, you’re an underrated music director—the final background score gave me goosebumps!
