The Martian Movie Story

In 2035, the crew of the Ares III mission is conducting research on Mars at Acidalia Planitia on the 18th Martian solar day (sol) of their 31-sol expedition. A violent dust storm threatens to topple their Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV), forcing an emergency evacuation. During the chaos, astronaut Mark Watney is struck by flying debris and presumed dead. With the MAV on the brink of collapse, the crew is forced to take off, leaving Watney behind. However, Watney survives the storm, awakening injured and with a critical low-oxygen warning. He makes his way back to the crew’s surface habitat (“Hab”) and treats his wound. Once stabilized, he begins a video diary to document his experience. With no way to communicate with Earth, his only hope for rescue lies in the next Mars mission, Ares IV, set to land in four years at the Schiaparelli crater, 3,200 kilometers (2,000 miles) away. The Ares IV MAV has already been delivered to the site in preparation for the mission.

Watney’s first challenge is survival, particularly food. Being a botanist, he creates a makeshift garden inside the Hab, using Martian soil fertilized with the crew’s bio-waste and generating water from leftover rocket fuel. He plants potatoes that were intended for a Thanksgiving meal and starts modifying a rover for the long journey to the Ares IV MAV. Meanwhile, back on Earth, NASA satellite planner Mindy Park reviews satellite images of the Mars site and notices movement in the equipment, leading her to realize that Watney is still alive. NASA director Teddy Sanders announces the news to the public but withholds it from the Ares III crew, who are on their return journey to Earth

The Martian Movie Review

I recently watched The Martian for the first time, and I have to say, it’s really good. While I’m not usually a huge fan of sci-fi, this movie is an exception. It takes a more grounded, realistic approach to the genre, which I appreciated, unlike films like Star Wars, Terminator, or Blade Runner that rely on ray guns, time travel, and flying cars.

The soundtrack really stood out to me. Instead of using slow, dark, or eerie music that might match the gravity of being stranded on Mars, the movie opts for upbeat, “happy” songs like “I Will Survive” and “Turn the Beat Around.” At first glance, they seem out of place, but given the main character’s efforts to stay optimistic, it makes perfect sense. The upbeat tunes reflect his attempt to push away the harsh reality that he could die there. The cast is fantastic, with each actor shining in their role. Jeff Daniels nails his serious, pessimistic character, while Donald Glover’s portrayal of a bumbling, absent-minded astrodynamicist is spot-on. If you haven’t seen this movie yet and enjoy realistic sci-fi or just want to pass 2.5 hours with a great film, The Martian is definitely worth your time.
